Tapping China’s Small Cap Potential

Innovation, urbanisation, and the rising purchasing power of middle class consumers – these are just some of the driving forces behind the growth of small companies in China today. The universe of small companies is rapidly expanding, generating many attractive investment opportunities.

Lead Portfolio Manager Tiffany Hsiao, CFA, will outline the traits that help China’s smaller-cap firms flourish with less volatility than the market against a backdrop of limited access to capital and privileges afforded to state-owned companies. In addition, she will discuss the current environment for investing in China, the fundamentals of the asset class, and how the Matthews China Small Companies portfolio is constructed.

Local Knowledge, “Quantamental’’ Approach

Please Join Oliver Lee, investment director for emerging market and Chinese equities, as he highlights the Merian China Equity Fund’s unique combination of local knowledge and “quantamental” investment process.  He will explain how Ping An Asset Management, a part of the Chinese financial services giant, manages the fund and provides valuable on-the-ground experience, resources and knowledge.  The portfolio managers use a combined quantitative and fundamental approach that marries advanced screening techniques and portfolio optimization with traditional bottom-up equity analysis to target alpha-generating stocks.  Given ongoing trade war rhetoric and an evolving domestic economy, Chinese equities are at an interesting juncture and offer plenty of opportunities for savvy investors.
